COVER: Eye from an infant with non-accidential injuries caused by severe shaking, who died from brain injuries including subdural haemorrhage. There are intraocular haemorrhages in the peripheral retina and around the optic disk with relative sparing of the equatorial retina, which is characteristic of the effects of indirect injury due to shaking. (Case taken from Green et al, BJO 1996;80:282-7. See also correspondence section, this issue, pp. 333–4.) Subdural optic nerve haemorrhage is also present.
