How big is the burden of visual loss caused by age related macular degeneration in the United Kingdom?

Table 4

Prevalence figures applied to UK population predictions to give the expected number (in thousands) of AMD caused PS, PS/B, B, VI (visual acuity of 6/18 or less), GAMD and NVAMD (95% CI), stratified by age, for 2001 and 2011

Number of PS Number of PS/B Number of B Number of VI Number with GAMD Number with NVAMD
Age range (years) 2001 2011 2001 2011 2001 2011 2001 2011 2001 2011 2001 2011
Apparent errors in the tabular sums of prevalence are due to rounding errors. PS = partial sighted, best VA 6/18, >6/60, caused by AMD. PS/B = partial/blind, best VA 6/60, 3/60. B = blind, best VA <3/60. VI = visual impairment, best VA 6/18 or less. GAMD = geographical/dry/atrophic/non-exudative/late AMD in at least one eye, NVAMD = neovascular/exudative/wet AMD in at least one eye. Binomial exact 95% CI given in parenthesis.
