CAN WE STRENGTHEN EXTRAOCULAR MUSCLES?
The problem of myotoxicity of extraocular muscles following the local use of anaesthetic agents is well recognised. Scott and coworkers now emphasise that this toxicity may be used to our advantage. They describe a case of an adult patient with residual esotropia who was effectively treated by injecting the lateral rectus muscle in the deviated eye. They conclude that the myotoxicity of local anaesthetics involving the extraocular muscle may result in permanent strengthening of the involved muscle and may therefore be an appropriate alternative form for treating strabismus.
