We read with interest the article from the Blue Mountains Eye Study reporting a prospective association of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) to cardiovascular disease mortality in an Australian population.1 This study provides further evidence that both AMD and thromboembolic vascular diseases may share similar risk factors and underlying pathogenetic mechanisms, and is in keeping with the findings from other studies.2
