Bilateral choroidal melanocytosis

2. Describe the underlying histopathological basis for the clinical appearance

Increased number of uveal melanocytes which are plump and ovoid in shape, containing excessive melanin granules in the cytoplasm, and obscuring uniform small nuclei.1

3. Is this patient at increased risk of developing an intraocular tumour?

Caucasian patients with choroidal melanocytosis are at an increased risk of developing uveal melanoma.2

COMMENT

Choroidal melanocytosis falls within the spectrum of oculo (dermal) melanocytosis as it refers to melanocytosis limited to the choroid rather than whole of uvea and episclera.3
