Arthur MacCallan was a recently trained young ophthalmologist when he set off to Cairo in 1903. This work was funded by the Cassel Trust Fund of £40 000 established by Sir Ernest Cassel. Cassel migrated penniless from Germany to Liverpool and made a fortune in finance and engineering, and became one of Britain's richest men. While building the Aswan Dam he became aware of the large problem of trachoma and blindness in the new British Protectorate of Egypt.
