The recent publication of the NICE glaucoma guidelines (http://www.nice.org.uk/) has led to a large increase in new patient referrals from community optometrists to the Hospital Eye Service (HES) with possible glaucoma. Changes in population demographics mean that these numbers are likely to rise further in the coming years. As well as putting a strain on the HES capacity, this increase in potentially false-positive referrals has significant financial implications for PCTs and can cause unnecessary distress and anxiety to patients.
