The authors Bijlsma, Paridaens and Kalmann are to be commended for their excellent work on the treatment of idiopathic orbital inflammation (IOI) presented in this issue of the journal (see page xxx).1 Although it is retrospective, their study is one of the few comparison case series on the treatment of this condition. The disease is relatively uncommon and hence this series is small despite its multi-centre patient source.

Steroids remain the drug of choice for IOI on the basis of cost, availability, easy oral administration and patient response. Interestingly, the literature on the treatment of IOI lacks randomised controlled trials on …
