The presence of proliferative sickle retinopathy (PSR), the extent of involvement of PSR, and vitreous haemorrhage all constitute risk factors for the formation of epiretinal membranes. The occlusion of PSR lesions by treatment appears to reduce the risk of epiretinal membranes being formed.
