Some of their students or disciples, ‘Sons’, have gone on to achieve sufficient greatness to attract the title in their own right. Antonio Scarpa (figure 1) was one such individual, described as the Father of Italian Ophthalmology, though he himself was not an ophthalmologist. Antonio Scarpa was one of the greatest anatomists and surgeons of all time. He studied at Padua under Giovanni Battista Morgagni (1682–1771) the founder of pathological anatomy and was greatly influenced by him.
