Hypoxia inhibits nephrogenesis through paracrine Vegfa despite the ability to enhance tubulogenesis
2015, Kidney InternationalCitation Excerpt :Moreover, using two different antibodies directed against Vegfa, branching could be rescued considerably in the presence of ‘hypoxic medium’ (Figure 5c). Since there are contradictory reports regarding the expression of Vegf receptors in MDCK cells,36,37 we tested for the expression of Vegf receptor 1 (Flt-1) and Vegf receptor 2 (Flk-1) in the MDCK cells used in our experiments. We found that Flt-1, but not Flk-1 is expressed in these cells (Supplementary Figure S4A online).
Vasopressin induces human mesangial cell growth via induction of vascular endothelial growth factor secretion
2011, NeuropeptidesCitation Excerpt :However, the precise role of VEGF in the kidney is unknown. While renal biopsy studies have indicated that VEGF receptors are predominantly expressed on glomerular endothelial cells, faint expression has also been detected in the mesangial area, and expression has also been demonstrated in cultured rat and human mesangial cells (Takahashi et al., 1995; Thomas et al., 2000). In addition, human and rat mesangial cells have been proven to produce VEGF, synthesis of which is stimulated by cytokines that are important regulators of mesangial cell functions during development of glomerulopathies such as transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) (Takahashi et al., 1995; Iijima et al., 1993; Finkenzeller et al., 1992).
Clinical implications of growth factors in flexor tendon wound healing
2004, Journal of Hand SurgeryThe role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in renal pathophysiology
2004, Kidney InternationalVascular endothelial growth factor isoforms and their receptors are expressed in human osteoarthritic cartilage
2003, American Journal of PathologyCitation Excerpt :In our study, all of the OA cartilage samples expressing VEGFR-2 also expressed NRP-1. VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2 were originally thought to be expressed predominantly in endothelial cells, but recent studies have indicated that other types of cells also express one or both of the receptors: VEGFR-1 is expressed in trophoblasts,31 monocytes,32 and mesangial cells,33 and VEGFR-2 is expressed in hematopoietic stem cells, megakaryocytes,34 and retinal progenitor cells.35 The present data add OA chondrocytes in the list, and suggest the possible direct actions of VEGF on the articular chondrocytes in OA.
