2012, NeuroscienceCitation Excerpt :Although IL-2 seems to exert its neuromodulatory role in the retina (Marra et al., 2011; Sholl-Franco et al., 2001a,b), the expression of the IL-2R has not yet been determined in this tissue throughout postnatal development. Conversely, enhanced levels of IL-2 have been described in some retinal pathological conditions, such as optic neuritis, diabetic retinopathy, endogenous uveitis, and LPS-induced neuroinflammation (Zandian et al., 2009; Johnsen-Soriano et al., 2010; Barton et al., 1993, 1995; Charteris and Lightman, 1993; Touchard et al., 2010), suggesting a role in the mechanisms of these pathologies. Moreover, IL-2 receptor blockade improves vision score of uveitis patients, suggesting that IL-2 signals through its specific receptor on retinal tissue (Yeh et al., 2008).
