Primary human RPE cells are limited by the heterogeneity between different donor cultures (Burke et al., 1996) and the limited supply of donor's eyes for RPE cell lines (Hazim et al., 2019). Alternatively, experiments are being conducted using RPE cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (Lorem et al., 2017; Zhang et al., 2020), but the differentiation process is costly and time-consuming (Hazim et al., 2019), and RPE cells derived from stem cells have been shown to have problems with their function after several passages (Singh et al., 2013).
