2021, Journal of Diabetes and its ComplicationsCitation Excerpt :Another consistent finding in delayed wound healing is an increase in wound expression and activation of enzymes primarily involved in extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation termed the matrix metalloproteinases, MMPs.18–20 MMP-1 and MMP-8 have been found to be higher in wound fluid from chronic nonhealing wounds.18 MMP-8 is secreted by fibroblasts, neutrophils, and macrophages and MMP-1 is derived from keratinocytes in wounds.18,20
