Biomaterials for tarsal plate reconstruction and our innovative work

2016, Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :This is a simple graft to harvest, with the eyelid anesthetized and everted and the tarsus harvested from the upper edge of the tarsus, keeping 2.5 mm to 3 mm of marginal tarsus undisturbed. If there is no good option for a tarsal graft, hard palate mucosa,16 nasal chondromucosa, ear cartilage,17 and commercially available tissue grafts18 can be substituted. A lid margin laceration or defect extending medial to the puncta, a canalicular laceration, or defect must be suspected.
Modified auricular cartilage sling for paralytic ectropion
2015, Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic SurgeryCitation Excerpt :Auricular cartilage grafting has some advantages. Since the ear is easily included in the same surgical field as the eyelids during surgical preparation and draping,28 the harvest of auricular cartilage is straightforward and its elastic texture accommodates the elasticity and curve of the lower eyelid. Some previous surgical procedures using auricular cartilage for the total suspension of lower eyelid ectropion have resulted in postoperative lower eyelid fixation.3,14
Trachomatous Trichiasis and its Management in Endemic Countries
2012, Survey of OphthalmologyCitation Excerpt :In order to achieve lid closure, it is sometimes necessary to lengthen the posterior lamella with grafted tissue. A number of different graft materials have been used: nasal septal cartilage, buccal mucosa, palatal mucosa, donor sclera, contralateral tarsoconjunctiva, and auricular cartilage (overlaid with a mucous membrane).13,14,33,48,70,110,114,119,122 Typically the procedure involves a posterior tarsotomy, lamellar division, and suturing of the graft material between distal and proximal tarsal fragments.
Thyroid eye disease: Honing your skills to improve outcomes
2010, Journal of AAPOSCitation Excerpt :Upper eyelid retractor release does not require the placement of a spacer, but lower eyelid retractor release typically does and this may be provided by ear cartilage graft, hard palate graft, or a synthetic alternative. Our preference is ear cartilage as it causes less discomfort to the patient than hard palate grafts and, when harvested well by avoiding the rim of the ear, leaves an imperceptible cosmetic deficit.58 Procedures designed to address eyelid retraction should take place after strabismus surgery since the latter may exacerbate eyelid retraction.
