Photoreceptors fromEupagurus bernhardus andAstacus leptodactylus were stimulated by a sequence of light flashes of equal intensity, and receptor potentials were recorded extracellularly at 2°C. The method permits measurement of the adaptive effect of a second light flash depending on the interval,a, following a preceding conditioning flash.
The adaptation effectiveness of flash 2 decreases with increasinga until a minimum ata = 500 msec is reached. Further prolongation ofa causes an increase of the effectiveness of flash 2 which finally saturates ata > 1min.
The observed adaptation is probably independent of the photochemical cycle and seems to be related to membrane phenomena. The decrease of the effectiveness of flash 2 could be explained by a changed calcium-mediated conductivity increase during the electrical response evoked by flash 1. The final increase in effectiveness of the second flash is assumed to be caused by restoration of ionic gradients by active transport mechanisms.
