This method has a high sensitivity (ability to detect a low copy number of DNA) and is, therefore, ideally suited to the low inoculum frequently found in eye infections.34 The specificity of PCR is not dependent on the viability of the micro-organisms present in the sample, as opposed to culture methods, and is therefore particularly useful in cases of prior antibiotic treatment.
