    MITOCHONDRIAL DNA CONTENT IN PATIENTS WITH NAION

    The pathophysiology of non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is only incompletely understood. Abu-Amero and Bosley investigated 19 patients with NAION and, compared to a control group of 32, they found increased relative mitochondria DNA content in leucocytes in patients with NAION. They suggest that this may possibly be a response to oxidative stress. A relative increase in mitochondrial DNA content in leucocytes may be a relative risk factor in the development of NAION.
