CHILDHOOD BLINDNESS IN BANGLADESH
In developed countries, the most common cause of significant visual impairment in childhood is brain damage. In contrast, Shah and coworkers report that in a study from Bangladesh the main location of abnormality causing visual loss in children was the lens, primarily due to unoperated cataract. This was followed by corneal pathology. Many of these causes are obviously avoidable, or at the very least, treatable. The authors discuss strategies for control and management of these problems.
