However, it is estimated that 2–7% of patients undergoing this procedure develop melting of the overlying sclera/bovine pericardial patch with erosion of the tube through the conjunctiva. Ainsworth and co-workers describe a novel approach to this problem using amniotic membrane as a patch. Autologous serum was used to promote epithelial growth.
