Low [Mg2+]o has induced [Ca2+]i spikes through multiple presynaptic or postsynaptic pathways (Abele et al., 1990; McLeod et al., 1998; Rose et al., 1990; Shen et al., 1996). Fluoxetine may act simultaneously at multiple ligand-gated and voltage-gated ion channels involved in glutamate-induced synaptic transmission in cultured rat hippocampal neurons.
