These data did not include visual acuity outcomes, but in a previous analysis of 440 patients [15] with visual acuity data, 91.6% had visual acuity better than 20/160 before PBT and 35% of patients had vision worse than 20/200 after PBT. At the University of California, San Francisco, early data compared outcomes in a non-randomised and retrospective manner between particle therapy (PBT and helium ions) and iodine-125 brachytherapy with a 54 month follow-up [16].

Initial poor visual acuity is another important determinant of ultimate visual acuity that is itself related to tumor size and location,42,43 and in that sense our patients had unfavorable initial characteristics compared to other study patients. Finally, proton beam therapy may be considered as a safe and efficient alternative to enucleation in patients with large choroidal melanomas (defined as AJCC stage T3 and T4) with respect to survival rates, local control, and visual acuity.
