Patient selection
The Human Subjects Subcommittee of the Institutional Review Board of the University of Miami School of Medicine approved this study. All subjects signed an informed consent form. Complete eye examinations, including examination of the optic nerve and retina, were performed in all subjects. Glaucoma subjects older than 17 years with known glaucoma, defined as characteristic cupping of the optic nerve and glaucomatous VF defects in at least one eye, regardless of intraocular pressure (IOP) level,
Results
The age of normal subjects (mean ± SD, 42.8±14.6 years [range, 19–88 years]) was significantly less than that of glaucoma subjects (68.4±12.8 years [range, 23–90], P<0.001). Seventy-seven percent (84/109) of normal subjects were female, whereas 70% (44/63) of glaucoma subjects were female. Of the 109 normal patients, 52 (47.7%) were identified as white (Hispanic), 29 (26.6%) were black, 23 (21.1%) were white (non-Hispanic), and 5 (4.6%) were Asian. Of the 63 glaucoma subjects, 22 (34.9%) were
Discussion
The StratusOCT has the capability of measuring RNFL within an 8- to 10-μm resolution. This is accomplished through the ability of OCT to distinguish precisely the interface between the vitreous cavity and retinal nerve fiber surface anteriorly and the retinal nerve fibers and the retinal ganglion cells posteriorly. Taking measurements at 768 points in a 3.4-mm-diameter circle around the optic nerve head, there are ample data to determine the thickness of the RNFL. The current study demonstrates
